GRAFENWOEHR, Germany -- April is Month of the Military Child, 30 days set aside to honor the contributions, strength and service of children in the military community.
"These children have sacrificed their lives," said Lana Muzzy, Parent and Outreach director for Child, Youth and School Services.
"They move around all the time and support deployed parents. Our job is to celebrate these children and to show our pride," she added.
To pay tribute to our local military children, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, CYSS, along with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, will host a series of activities around the garrison throughout April. The capstone event will be the Kinderfest, April 24, at the Wild B.O.A.R. Outdoor Recreation facility.
The following events are scheduled in Rose and Tower Barracks for Month of the Military Child.
April 1-25: Show your Military Child Pride. Military children will receive a surprise gift after completing a coloring sheet. Sheet can be picked up from the Tower or Rose Barracks Libraries during opening hours, April 1-11. They can be returned for the gift April 14-25 at either location.
April 3-4: Midnight Basketball Lock-In. Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to stay the night at the Tower Barracks Field House to play basketball. There will be free throw and three point contests, hot shot and an obstacle course. Snacks, drinks and breakfast will be provided. Tower Barracks Field House, Bldg. 547, 8 p.m.-8 a.m.
April 6-10: Volunteer in Child Care in Unit Settings/Parent on Site training. Volunteer Child Care in Unit Settings is a program that trains volunteers to provide child care during unit meetings or events when those kids' parents are on site. Units may use VCCUS volunteers from their unit or provide care for another unit's functions. The training is in Rose Barracks, Bldg. 224, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call DSN 476-2760, CIV 09662-83-2760 to sign up.
April 15: I Am Alone Workshop. This program teaches children the skills to be safe and productive while home alone. Sessions include the following topics: Are you Ready?; Strangers and Dangers; Troubleshooting; and Kitchen Safety and First Aid. The workshop will be in Rose Barracks Bldg. 224, 3-5 p.m. Call DSN 476-2760, CIV 09662-83-2760 to sign up.
April 17: Explore Army Vehicles. All children, regardless of CYSS registration, are welcome to come explore and learn about Army vehicles. The vehicles will be parked in front of the Netzaberg CDC, 9-11:30 a.m.
April 24: Kinderfest. The annual Kinderfest is the major Month of the Military Child celebration at USAG Bavaria. There will be games, activities (like the climbing wall,) face painting, jumping castles and more. The fest will be at the Wild B.O.A.R. Outdoor Recreation facility, RC600 Tank Road in Tower Barracks, 3:30-6:30 p.m. The event is free, but some concessions may be for sale.
Every Saturday in April: Cosmic Bowling. At the Tower and Rose Barracks Bowling Centers, children bowl at a special rate of $3.25 per game, plus the cost of shoes. For more, call Tower Barracks at DSN 475-6177, CIV 09641-83-6177 and Rose Barracks at DSN 476-2576, CIV 09662-83-2576.
