FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The U.S. Army Security Assistance Training Management Organization hosted its first Industry Day at the Embassy Suites in neighboring Fayetteville on March 11. The event brought together nearly 150 representatives from more than 80 different companies.

The day began with an overview of USASATMO's mission provided by the commander, Col. Andy Boston. USASATMO provides Security Assistance Teams in support of U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide.

"It's a small organization that punches well above its weight," Boston said.

USASATMO's Security Assistance Teams are active in 25 nations worldwide at any given time. In many cases, small Security Assistance Teams -- less than 10 people strong -- are the only contact many foreign allies will have with the U.S. government.

USASATMO relies on both contractors and Soldiers for many of its missions. In many cases, only contractors have the skills and resources necessary to train foreign military personnel. Moreover, there are some instances in which the demand for U.S. trainers greatly exceeds the capacity of the Army, hence the need to utilize contractors.

Its training mission varies, from medical and weapons systems, to aviation and even military training such as the Warrior Leader Course.

Following Boston's briefing, Casie Savage, a contracting officer for Mission and Installation Contracting Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, described the contracting process and answered questions.

For the industry representatives, USASATMO Industry Day was an excellent opportunity to understand how they might fit into USASATMO's worldwide mission.

John Tully, a retired colonel who now works for Blackbird Technologies, had never worked directly with USASATMO during his 30-year Army career. He said Boston's briefing was a great learning experience.

USASATMO is a subordinate command of the U.S. Army Security Assistance Command at Redstone Arsenal. In fiscal 2014, USASAC managed more than $20 billion worth of foreign military sales, which included training for more than 10,000 foreign soldiers worldwide.
