There's something about .......Sydney. Even for the average spectator or the casual fan she stands out. It's not just her height but the way she moves; like an athlete who has been here and done that. Every movement is done with a purpose and with precision. This will work to her advantage since those who participate in track and field throwing events such as discus and shot put value technique just as much as pure power.
Spc. Sydney Davis, a Parker County, Colorado native, now attached to Fort Belvoir's Warrior Transition Unit (WTU), is new to the Army Trials, but not new to competitive sports. A high school state qualifier in track and field's discus throw and a four-year letter winner in basketball, she is one of many Army athletes competing at Fort Bliss, Texas for a coveted spot on the Army team that will compete against other services' best warrior athletes in the 2015 Department of Defense Warrior Games. During the March 29 -- April 2, Army Trials, she will compete in the discus throw, shot put and also in archery events.
Davis, a U.S. Army Reserve lab technician, has only been with Fort Belvoir's WTU since September 2014 and is genuinely indebted to the WTU team for not only offering her support and encouragement, but for steering her in the direction of the Adaptive Reconditioning program offered by the WTUs across the Army. Adaptive reconditioning includes any physical activities that wounded, ill and injured Soldiers participate in regularly to support their physical and emotional well-being. These activities contribute to a successful recovery for Soldiers whether they are transitioning back to active duty or to civilian life. "Since day one adaptive sports and reconditioning has been my outlet. Sport is the place I can go and focus on the task."
Davis said it's the participation in sports that allows her to let go of everything else, adding "it's the best way I can express myself. It's where I feel I belong."
Davis is a quiet competitor, but the quiet demeanor shouldn't be confused with a lack of drive and determination. It's as if she has something to prove to all who may doubt her; knowing full well she will succeed. Her goal is to not only make the Army team but to go on and have success during the summer's Department of Defense Warrior Games. "I'm a competitor, and I just want to compete." Skeptics and naysayers beware; Davis will do more than that.
