CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait -- Battling through dust storms and an ever-changing, fast-paced environment, two U.S. Army Sustainment Command's Journey to Leadership students gained vital leadership skills while moving forward in their careers as Department of the Army Civilians.

The 402nd Army Field Support Brigade hosted JTL participants Stephanie L. Wynn, a financial management analyst in the ASC Resource Management Directorate and Brittany D. Hayes, an administrative support assistant in the ASC Logistics Directorate. During their 20-day developmental assignment with the 402nd AFSB the duo learned about the unit's mission and focus within Central Command's area of responsibility, Feb. 10 to Mar. 3.

ASC's JTL program is a nine-month leadership development program that teaches Army civilians leadership, team building and effective communication skills. As part of the program, the participants are tasked to complete a developmental assignment away from their home station.

"The reason I got involved with the program is that I wanted an opportunity to learn and gain experience in other fields outside my occupation and to become a better overall leader," Hayes said. "The program allows you to grow as a professional and work with people to the best of your ability."

During their time in Kuwait, the JTL participants shadowed 402nd AFSB and Army Field Support Battalion-Kuwait personnel from various duty sections, and toured multiple brigade facilities throughout the country.

"It was great getting to see the mission firsthand," Wynn said. "While working at the ASC headquarters in Rock Island, I issue and certify funding for various purchases within the 402nd AFSB. It was a wonderful opportunity to see in person how the funding is actually being utilized."

Hayes remarked that being away from her family was challenging, but believes the experience was a great opportunity.

"I was able to learn many things that I would never get a chance to experience otherwise; this is in regard to life as a Soldier, what goes on at the 402nd (AFSB), and what living in Kuwait is like," she said. "It was amazing to see how hard everyone works and how professional people are at the 402nd. There is so much going on, and I feel that I am able to provide input at ASC that I did not have the ability to do before."

Wynn also remarked that she was thankful for what team members of the 402nd AFSB provide.

"I appreciate the 402nd AFSB and AFSBn-Kuwait for allowing me to have the opportunity to visit and learn about all of the amazing operations and missions that are being accomplished in Kuwait," she said. "Everyone was so welcoming and willing to share their knowledge of the mission."
