VICENZA, Italy--The Vicenza chapter of the Spanish National Honor Society welcomed six new members during a March 11 ceremony at Caserma Ederle's Golden Lion. This group recognizes high student achievement in Spanish and promotes a continuity of interest in Hispanic Studies.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for students to be recognized for outstanding achievement in Spanish studies," said Linda Dahlstrom, Vicenza High School Spanish teacher and the chapter sponsor. "Also, it provides a venue for students to share their interests in the Spanish language and culture with their school and community members."
For returning member Charlene Caldwell, being a part of the Spanish NHS is about challenging herself.
"I enjoy learning as much as I can about the language and culture and contributing to the group," said Caldwell.
During the ceremony, current members spoke about the chapter and its history, pointing out the importance of being in this select group. Then each of the new members lit a candle to symbolize the start of their new journey.
"I decided to join the group because of a general interest in Spanish language and culture," said new inductee Tim Ney. He also said he's looking forward to linking to other cultures and people in ways he can relate to.
In order to be in Spanish NHS, students must be in 10th grade or above and be currently enrolled in Spanish class. They must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in Spanish.
