March is designated as National Brain Injury Awareness Month. From a DOD standpoint, the goal is to educate Soldiers, leaders, Family Members and retirees on ways to mitigate these types of injuries, as well as the symptoms, diagnostic measures and treatments associated with traumatic brain injury.
The Fort Drum Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic staff has activities planned in an effort to increase awareness and understanding about what TBIs are, how they occur, and ways to assist in recovering. There will be table displays set up at both the Post Exchange and Guthrie Ambulatory Health Care Clinic with free informational pamphlets and brochures to increase awareness.
The Fort Drum TBI Clinic staff will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20 and will give tours of the facility to show everything they have to offer in the realm of TBI diagnosis and treatment. The tour also will give visitors an opportunity to meet the staff that is composed of more than 14 medical professionals.
At noon March 20, there will be a cake-cutting ceremony at the clinic in honor of National Brain Injury Awareness Month.
The Fort Drum TBI Clinic has led the way throughout U.S. Army Medical Command with the implementation of certain initiatives geared at patient satisfaction. One such initiative is the development of a QR Scanner that is located throughout the clinic. The QR Scanner gives patients the ability to use their smartphones to immediately access the TBI's Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) website and give feedback on their patient experience while it is still "fresh" in their minds.
Since many TBI patients suffer from difficulties with memory, this initiative affords them a quick and easy way to immediately make comments or complaints about the TBI treatment they have received. This instant feedback lets the TBI Clinic staff know if anything needs to be addressed to improve the quality of care provided.
The Fort Drum TBI Clinic is a referral-based clinic, but walk-ins and self-referrals are allowed for all active-duty members. For additional information, call 772-8639 / 8643.
