VILSECK, Germany -- You were brought over from the states? You get paid to do this? How can I get that job? These are just a few of the questions Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Military Spouse Fellows receive when working on financial counseling assignments on U.S. military posts around the world.
The FINRA Foundation's Military Spouse Fellowship program covers the cost of testing and training for military spouses to receive to the Accredited Financial Counselor certification from The Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education.
As an AFC, military spouses serve their military community by providing financial education and counseling services in family readiness centers, credit counseling centers, tax service centers, and military emergency relief offices.
Fellowship graduates also support short term assignments with National Guard, reserve, recruiting units and military special events around the world. Military spouses are in high demand for these positions, as they understand the unique financial needs of military families.
"I feel very fortunate to have been chosen to receive the FINRA Military Spouse Fellowship in 2008. Achieving my AFC designation has allowed me to have a portable career during my husband's active duty career - in other words - lots of PCSing," said Angie Cumming, who works with Zeiders Enterprises to support military events on-demand.
"Working as an Accredited Financial Counselor had allowed me to use my finance background to make a tangible impact in someone's life. I love helping fellow military families work through tough financial situations, and mentoring them toward achieving their financial goals," said Cari Lingle, a 2009 FINRA Fellow.
According to FINRA, Military Spouse Fellows have logged more than 400,000 hours helping military families reach their financial goals, and 470 spouse fellows have graduated from the program.
