JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash.- Soldiers of 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade have partnered up with an area school to participate in the Adopt-a-School Program offered through Steilacoom Historical School District.

The program allows Soldiers to team-up with area school and allows them a chance to give back to their community at large. Adopt-a-School is a mentoring program for students from Kindergarten to Third Grade. The Soldiers are able to assist with different aspects of their curriculum such as mathematics, reading comprehension, communication skills and physical fitness.

Mentors help improve self-esteem, help strengthen communication skills, and they also help keep students in school.

According to research published by Public and Private Ventures of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip class.

The Coordinator of Adopt-a-School Program for the unit Spc. Megan Wojtas, said "Students need to understand that a Soldier is more than a title and uniform, we all use to be students in school, so we can relate to them. Adopt-a-School allows us to interact and bond with the students and provide positive mentorship."

Being able to give back to the community at large is something that Soldiers of 5-5 ADA are proud to do, and look forward to supporting the student's activities. Some of the activities Soldiers from 5-5 ADA will be assisting the school and student with are, providing a Color Guard Presentation for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, safety clean-up, a Talent Show, assist in physical fitness testing and a Field-Trip Day.
