TOOELE ARMY DEPOT, Utah, (January 27, 2015) -- Improvements to several 1942 era warehouse buildings within the Ammunition Equipment Directorate complex are continuing to augment the quality of life as well as productivity at Tooele Army Depot (TEAD), Utah.
The second of three U.S. Army buildings at TEAD have completed renovation using Sustainment, Restoration, and Modernization (SRM) funding.
The Pilot Model Shop was constructed in 1942 as a Carpenter Shop and Shook (barrel) Storage Building. The building was approximately 16,400 square feet. In 1980, a 3,000 square foot addition was added to the north end to be used as a welding shop for the Directorate of Ammunition Equipment.
A $3.2 million contract was awarded in September 2013 to a local Utah construction company, Northern Construction Inc. During the summer of 2014, the building was completely demolished except for exterior walls and foundation which remained in place as required by renovation regulations. Also removed was an old underground oil storage tank and boiler.
The existing post and beam wood frame building was replaced with a new clear span pre-manufactured metal building. The clear span structure will enable greatly improved workflow through the Pilot Model Shop allowing increased efficiency.
"Some notable improvements incorporated within the remodeling phase were new modern high efficiency natural gas unit heaters and heat pumps," said Richard Anderson, Garrison Operations, facilities engineer technician. The natural gas line was also extended to supply this building.
The over-arching benefit to the facility was the new overhead crane and fire sprinklers throughout the entire building.
Additional improvements to the facility were a new overhead crane and fire sprinkler throughout the entire building.
An addition of 3,000 square feet was added to the north-side of the building for administrative office space, restroom facilities and break area; improving the quality of life for approximately 38 Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees.
"This upgraded facility will significantly increase shop efficiency while improving the working conditions for our critical shop personnel," said Robert Anderson, Director of Ammunition Equipment.
The remodeled facility will assist TEAD in the ability to fabricate and assemble a variety of equipment and parts for not only DoD customers, but public, private partnerships as well.
