FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 4, 2015) -- The Fort Benning Tax Center opened its doors for the tax season with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 30 at the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Building 2839.
The center will remain open until April 15 to provide free federal and state tax return assistance to active-duty and Reserve Soldiers, retirees and their Families.
Col. Patrick Donahoe, guest speaker and Manuever Center of Excellence chief of staff, said the center should be the first choice for Soldiers who want to save money and get the best service from highly trained tax preparers.
"You want that money in your pockets, and when you bring your tax information in, our guys will do the work for you," he said.
Capt. Billy Nelson, officer in charge for the tax center, said offering free tax service helps to avoid fees and interest rates that are charged by off-post commercial tax preparers. The center also features a new kiosk system designed to reduce wait times.
"Last year, people were waiting up to 30 minutes and that is too long for a simple return," Nelson said.
The center offers filing through the Military OneSource system, where individuals can use computers with free access to federal and state filing. Assistance will be available to help with any questions and tips on eligible credits.
The staff includes trained military and civilian personnel, operating under the Fort Benning Legal Assistance Program and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Tax assistance personnel will be trained and supervised by OSJA personnel.
Nelson said it is important to remember to bring Social Security cards for Soldiers and all members of the Family, military or dependent IDs and a state-issued photo ID.
In addition to W-2 forms, additional forms needed may include interest and brokerage account statements and a power of attorney.
The Tax Center is located on the third floor of the OSJA, Building 2839, 6450 Way Ave. Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tax preparation services are on a walk-in basis. Any refund checks issued will usually be received within seven to 12 days.
