FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 28, 2015) -- A kick off for the 2015 Run Ranger Run event will take place Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. to 5:25 p.m. at John P. Thayer YMCA in Columbus. There will be registration available, giveaways and prizes.

Participants will also have the opportunity to gain motivation, camaraderie and spirit while beginning to rack up the miles on Jan. 31 and share ideas on how to log miles, form teams and share previous running tips and tricks to accomplish 565 miles in 28 days.

Participants will run in a team of up to 10 individuals who will pledge to walk, run and or ride bicycles for a combined total of 565 miles in the month of February. They will raise funds for GallantFew and increase awareness for veteran issues.

The run honors 3rd Ranger Battalion veteran Cpl. Cory Smith's efforts to raise awareness for veterans' issues - particularly around divorce, unemployment, homelessness and suicide.

In 2012, after two combat deployments, experiencing friends killed and wounded, and his marriage failing, Smith decided to highlight his difficult journey home. Transitioning from the Army to civilian life is a transition many Soldiers find difficult, so he decided to undergo a very public and very difficult journey home himself. Smith decided to run 565 miles in 28 days with the ultimate goal of holding his daughter Elleigh in his arms at the end of his run.

How it works

•A team captain recruits and forms his or her team.

•Team goal is to walk, run or ride a bike (or any combination) a total of 565 miles during February.

•Teams can be two to 10 people.

•Teams are not limited geographically. It can be a local group that logs mileage together or could be a team spread out across the U.S. or even overseas.

•Teams can honor a fallen, wounded or serving Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine by naming their team in honor of that person, and their team website should be able to reflect that.

•Teams will register and track their progress online.

•Teams raise money by getting Family, friends and coworkers to sponsor them per mile.
