FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 28, 2015) -- Some on-post communities, accustomed to front-door mail delivery, will soon be receiving their mail at a centralized mail kiosk, conveniently located in their neighborhoods, said Mike Douglass, development executive with the Army Residential Communities Initiative.
Within several communities, the mail will be picked up and dropped off at two to three kiosks, depending on the size of the neighborhood, as opposed to the current letterboxes on their homes.
This United States Postal Service-led initiative has received support from Fort Benning garrison command and will increase efficiency for the postal carriers, as well as save the USPS time and cost incurred with making multiple stops.
The Patton, McGraw, Custer and Upatoi communities will continue to receive curbside delivery.
"All other family housing already has, or will soon have, mail kiosk delivery to convenient locations within their neighborhood," Douglass said.
The Davis, Bouton, Perkins and MacDonald communities on Fort Benning will soon see mail kiosks in their areas, Douglass said, while the Indianhead community already has the kiosks in place.
Homes located on East Main Post will be receiving the kiosks in the near future, he said.
"Now, instead of walking to hundreds of homes every day, (the postal carrier) will go to two locations in the neighborhood to deliver the mail," Douglass said.
Within the historic areas, the kiosks will blend in with the homes, he said.
The USPS plans to place the kiosks where residents will have a short walk to deposit and collect their mail, and the letterboxes currently on their homes will no longer be used. For larger packages, the recipients will receive a notification to report to the Fort Benning post office or the local neighborhood office or village center.
Douglass said the USPS is making every effort possible to make the kiosks handicap accessible.
Residents will receive a notice when the kiosks are in place, as well as when to pick up individual keys to open their boxes. Justin Goodson, development associate with RCI housing said a spare key will be kept at the neighborhood office or village center. The change is expected to begin within the next six months.
