FORT BENNING, Ga., (Jan. 28, 2015) -- The 75th Ranger Regiment headquarters company "led the way" Jan. 22 beating 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 53-24 in an intramural basketball game at Smith Fitness Center.

For the first nine minutes, the teams were stalemated at 1-1 with free-throw shots made by 1/10's Walter Parker and 75th's Blair Berry.

The game started slowly because the 75th players were getting off work and trying to get in the flow of the game, said Roger Powell, 75th's assistant coach. A couple of simple turnovers, losing the ball and slow passes were the issues, he said.

Followed by a 1/10 timeout, 75th's Daniel Terrell's half-court 3-pointer put the game back in favor of the 75th with an 11-point run putting them ahead 12-1.

Powell said when the 75th got in the groove, they boxed out, rebounded, picked it up on defense and were more intense on their passes.

"(Once Terrell) started shooting, it was just a matter of setting screens, letting him get open and letting him shoot," he said. "Then we had (T.J.) Widmer ... pretty much just scraping up on the rebounds."

Terrell had a game-high 29 points followed by Widmer with 16 points.

By the end of the half, 75th extended their lead to 22-7 by collecting points from the free-throw line.

75th shot 63 percent of their free throws topping 1/10's 43 percent.

In the second half, 75th started off with a six-point run, setting the tone with a burst of single-digit runs throughout rest of the game.

With three minutes remaining in the contest, 1/10's Michael Brown, who had a team-high seven points, and Carlos Guerreo rotated buckets with 75th's Kent Germaine and Terrell to round out the scoring with 75th getting the win 53-24.

When it came to some of 1/10's shooting, Powell said there was a lack of confidence and 75th was able to capitalize on it through defensive boards.

"At one point, I saw the guy (who) I was guarding didn't really have a shooting rhythm," he said. "I could see in him and kind of smell it on him that he didn't have the confidence in his shot."

Powell said because of 1/10's defense, it was tough when it came to scoring in the paint because every time Widmer would get the ball, 1/10 would double him up.

"Just trying to fight through that, trying to stay focused and make an intelligent pass was probably the hardest thing," he said.

Though it's competitive, when it comes down to it, Powell said the stress-relieving game is a good morale booster and 75th will live up to their motto "Rangers Lead the Way."

"We are going to come in with (that) attitude and we are going to win every time," he said. "We are going to give ... 100 percent."
