REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Jan. 15, 2015) --- The Aviation and Missile Command Value Engineering and Life Cycle Cost Reduction Programs held their 2014 awards ceremony Jan. 6 at the Bob Jones Auditorium.
The ceremony, which featured AMCOM commander Maj. Gen. James Richardson as the keynote speaker, recognized representatives from the Redstone community for their efforts to both VE and LCCR during fiscal 2014.
"If the Soldiers knew about this ceremony, there wouldn't be enough room to hold everyone. We'd need an auditorium of 10,000 more seats to hold everyone lined up to say thanks," said Richardson. "What you do every day is making a difference."
Tom Reynolds, Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center Command VE and LCCR Manager discussed the significance these programs have on the Warfighter.
"Awards and savings are important in these financially challenging times, but more important is the impact these projects have on our Soldiers' lives," Reynolds said. "Whether it's obsolescence mitigation, availability of parts, improved functionality, or reduction of maintenance burden, the Soldiers' lives are much better because of your efforts."
AMRDEC contributed $28 million in fiscal savings and cost avoidances, 215 percent of the anticipated $13 million goal. These savings supported AMCOM's 29th consecutive year exceeding the VE goal with a $54 million increase from the preceding year's savings. Of the 112 finalized VE proposals, AMRDEC employees contributed a variety of cost efficient benefits including reliability improvements, technology insertion, reduced administrative burden, and time deliveries.
"Value Engineering goes to the heart of Better Buying Power principles and should be considered a bottom-line practical example of how we are making a real difference for the Department of Defense," said AMRDEC Director James Lackey. "This is a great example of enabling Lifecycle Affordability and applying engineering/ technical 'smarts' to make or do things at a lesser cost."
The following Redstone organizations received VE award plaques for achieving their fiscal 2014 savings goals:
Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center; Aviation Ground Support Equipment; AMCOM Logistics Center; Joint Attack Munition Systems Project Office; Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Project Office; Precision Fires Rocket and Missile Systems Project Office; Thermal High Altitude Area Dense Project Office; and Utility Helicopters Project Office. Value Engineering certificates were also presented to VE coordinators and contracting personnel for their accomplishments.
In addition, the award ceremony recognized the AMCOM fiscal 2014 Life Cycle Cost Reduction efforts. Plaques were distributed to those that completed a LCCR project and certificates were given to those that received funding and started a project within the fiscal year.

The Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.
RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
