REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (January 7, 2015) -- The Redstone Test Center's Component and Surveillance Test division plays an important role in ensuring stockpiles of army missiles are functional and ready for use when needed.
Missiles are stored all over the world in various locations and under many types of environmental conditions that could potentially affect the weapons' performance.
Soldiers need to know that their weapons are safe, suitable and effective and RTC conducts specialized field tests to verify missile functionally in the United States and abroad.
Nancy Deep, electronics engineer with the Component and Surveillance Test Division, believes these tests are essential to the success of the Warfighter.
"Surveillance testing is critical in managing the reliability of missile stockpiles and gives field commanders confidence in their weapons," said Deep. "Army missiles are very effective but they are also complex."
RTC-developed functional test sets are installed in vehicles and operated by a team of engineers and technicians who deploy from Redstone Arsenal to locations of varying environments. RTC team members work to test missiles around the word and provide accurate results on the functionality of these missiles.
"It's safer to bring the test equipment to the missiles as opposed to shipping the missiles to the test center so RTC takes it on the road as needed," said Deep.
Testing these missiles is a team effort that requires the right people, equipment, and home station support during the sometimes multi-month deployments. This team effort is found at RTC. Robust equipment, technical capability, and dedicated personnel conduct this demanding, yet vital mission. RTC personnel are proud to be a part of the stockpile reliability program's success, said Deep.
RTC, a subordinate command of the Army Test and Evaluation Command, provides technical expertise, state-of-the-art facilities, and capabilities to plan, conduct, analyze, and report the results of test on missile and aviation systems, sensors, subsystems and components.
