DONGDUCHEON, South Korea -- Every year, as the holiday spirit creeps into the hearts and minds of the masses, people flock to their cars, malls and computers and begin the unofficial gift buying season. These exchanges are the physical manifestation of those warm and fuzzy feelings toward our family and friends. However, sometimes we overlook that and forget that some of our less fortunate neighbors are not able to play in those reindeer games.
On Christmas Eve though, Maj. James Brant, aviation officer for the 210th Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, and Warrant Officer 1 Gabrielle Prado, an electronic warfare technician for the brigade, donned the infamous crushed red velvet and white trimmed uniform of good old Saint Nick and handed out presents donated by friends and Family of the brigade to children at a Holiday event.
The party, held at the Dongducheon Volunteer Center in Dongducheon, South Korea was not only a celebration but also an opportunity to give back by handing out toys and spending time with underprivileged children of the local community
The toys handed out were donated by Soldiers and Families of the 210th FA Bde., throughout the month of December and sent to the volunteer center to be given out for Christmas.
Capt. Michael Perez, the information operations officer and civil military operations officer for 210th FA Bde., mentioned how this is more than just about the alliance.
"It's not just about strengthening the alliance between our countries," said Perez. "It's about doing the right thing and benefiting the people of Korea."
The children at the party were pleasantly surprised when Santa Claus came into the room with bags full of presents for them. More than 100 kids received presents from their mysterious visitors.
Brant, a native of West Point, N.Y., and one of the night's Santas, spoke about how important it is to spend time with the local community.
"Such events show that we are willing to engage with the community," said Brant. "It makes it better, I believe, for the people of Dongducheon to understand why we are here and that we are here to help."
After a successful delivery of all the presents, the Santas took some time to take photos with the children, adding to the holiday fun.
Ms. Lee Pok-hee, the director of the Dongducheon Volunteer Center, thanked the Soldiers of the brigade for taking their time to help the kids out.
"I really appreciate the Soldiers donating toys and actually coming to give them to the children," said Lee. "I hope these sorts of events can continue to go on."
Prado, a native of Tucson, Ariz., spoke about how glad he was to be a part of the event and help others out.
"I had a great time and I'm glad I volunteered to do this," said Prado. "I enjoy doing this for my kids and doing it for kids that are less fortunate just makes you feel better."
