COASTAL COMET 2008

By HIRO CHANGNovember 8, 2008

Presidio of Monterey kicked off its "Coastal Comet" Force Protection Exercise with a simulated hazardous spill. The exercise, which started at approximately 4 a.m., resulted in the Presidio of Monterey Police and Fire Departments responding to the spill. During the training, the Fire Department HAZMAT teams identified the spill contents and rescued mock casualties from the simulated contaminated zone. Police provided coordination support and kept bystanders from entering the simulated contamination zone. The exercise was designed to test the abilities of the emergency departments to respond in a timely and efficient manner. Additionally, the Garrison staff was afforded the opportunity to exercise command and control of the exercise from the Installation Operations Center.
