FORT SILL, Okla. -- Fort Sill's basketball team defended their home court Dec. 13-14 at Rinehart Fitness Center against McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., and Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.

They played both teams twice.

"It was good that we got the four wins on our home court. We can't ask for more," said coach Nate Johnson. "We're starting to play together and gel. It always takes eight to 10 games before we start knowing each other."

Fort Sill has taken the last five out of seven games which has put them at the top in the northern conference.

Johnson said they struggled defensively at times, but when they are on top of their defense they are unstoppable.

"When one person breaks down on the defensive end it hurts us all."

He said throughout the two days several players stood out such as Brandon Benefield who scored 29 points in the first game and grabbed 10 rebounds. Other players of note were Migael Baker with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Ellis Ella's 17 points.

"Every game different people stepped up and filled in those holes when we needed them."

After the Christmas break the team will travel to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, to play in the Martin Luther King Tournament Jan. 17-18. Then they play Jan. 24-25 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.

Johnson said the team is looking forward to the challenge of playing against tough teams like the squads from Lackland and Tinker, and they're going to continue to work hard to keep their winning streak alive.

"We're looking forward to the second half of the season. I'm happy with where we're at."

The coach and players invite Fort Sill Soldiers, Marines and family members to cheer them on at their next home games Feb. 21-22 at Rinehart Fitness Center.

Fort Sill will play Tinker Air Force Base Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. then McConnell Air Force Base at 5 p.m. The team plays McConnell again Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. and then Tinker at 2 p.m.
