FORT SILL, Okla.-- Staff Sgt. Samuel Layne and Spc. Courtney Hess, B Battery, 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery, recently won the 75th Field Artillery Brigade Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year awards.

Layne, an M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System section chief, is known as a dedicated professional and competent leader.

"Staff Sergeant Layne is our go-to NCO due to his strong work ethic and positive attitude," said Sgt. 1st Class Kelly Burton, his platoon sergeant. "You never catch him idle at work. He is always training his crew or preparing his launcher for the field."

First Lt. Daniel Robinson, platoon leader, echoed those sentiments when he said Layne is a prime example of a professional NCO.

"He is not only technically competent and proficient but manages to be an outgoing, friendly guy who spends much of his time mentoring Soldiers," said Robinson. Layne reminds his Soldiers to strive for excellence and set high goals for themselves.

"Be informed, motivated and work hard and you will be successful," he said.

When asked why he chose to join the military, Layne's answer reflected his selfless leadership

style and patriotism.

"I wanted to serve my country and train America's fighting men and women," he said. "It's a uniquely rewarding position that makes me look forward to coming to work at Fort Sill every day."

Hess was the top graduate in her class at the Warrior Leader Course. She serves as an M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System crewmember and is looking forward to her next promotion.

The Soldier's work ethic and potential for leadership drew the attention of her platoon leaders.

"Despite being new to Bravo Battery, Specialist Hess has displayed the highest potential for success and is an excellent role model for her peers," said Robinson.

Sgt. 1st Class Paul Beteta called Hess' enthusiasm "unmatched."

"She's constantly seeking more knowledge, developing her skills and becoming better every day; that drive sets her apart," he said.

She attributes her success to a positive attitude and dedication to her upbringing.

"I grew up in a military family," Hess said, "My dad was an NCO and a positive influence, teaching me the values I still hold today. All my family members have inspired me to build a successful career in the Army."

Advising new Soldiers, Hess tells them to first meet the standards and then exceed them.

"Never settle for less. Always aspire to be something greater," she said.

Layne and Hess will next compete for the Fires Center of Excellence NCO and Soldier of the Year.

In B Battery, "we set high goals and expectations, and our Soldiers are willing to work hard to meet them," said Layne.

"The unit's pride promotes strong relationships and dedication toward the mission," said Hess.
