FORT DEVENS, Mass. (Dec. 15, 2014) -- In a change of responsibility ceremony Dec. 15, Command Sgt. Maj. Jacqueline M. Coleman took over as U.S. Army Garrison Fort Devens command sergeant major.
Coleman received the unit colors from Command Sgt. Maj. Angel Ortiz-Guzman, the outgoing garrison command sergeant major, during the ceremony in the Hall of Flags. Ortiz-Guzman had been at USAG Fort Devens since March 2013.
Coleman comes to Fort Devens from U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul, Korea, where she was Army Reserve Engagement Team sergeant major. She entered the Army in March 1985 and has served in Operation Enduing Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom and in Desert Shield/Storm.
Lt. Col. Steven F. Egan, Fort Devens garrison commander, welcomed Coleman to the installation, which serves as a training resource for thousands of Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers spread throughout the six New England states.
"We, as a staff, are happy to have you here," Egan said. "I know that you've done exceptional work at your last assignment with Eighth Army-Korea, and look forward to serving with you here.
"You have a critical role as the garrison command sergeant major. The expectations are high, and I have no doubt that you will rise to meet them."
Coleman said that she was happy to join the Devens team.
"I understand that this is a very demanding and prestigious position, and I am up for the challenge," Coleman said. "To the staff, I look forward to serving with each and every one of you over the next few years, and I'm overwhelmed with a sense of pride and humility to be afforded the opportunity to be part of this great command team."
Egan bid farewell to Ortiz-Guzman, who will become the Army Reserve G-1 sergeant major.
"Command Sergeant Major Ortiz served as a reality check … for many challenging events and experiences," Egan said. "As a critical piece of the command team, I trust him, rely on his judgment, common sense and friendship, and respect him as the epitome of a leader and a noncommissioned officer."
Ortiz-Guzman thanked the Devens staff and community for their support during his tour.
"I consider myself an ordinary man surrounded by extraordinary professionals, and I hope that I performed to your expectations," Ortiz-Guzman said. "I'm departing at ease knowing that Command Sergeant Major Coleman will lead well."
