Volunteers team up to help spread holiday cheer to 19 Tripler Army Medical Center Fisher House families on Dec. 7, 2014.
Hannah and Jackson Button, a brother and sister attending Island pacific Academy (PA) have spearheaded "Operation Holiday Heroes," collecting donations, games and other gifts to recognize the special sacrifices that military families make for the country.
The siblings began their own non-profit, "Dream of a Better World," after their mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
From there, Buttons started "Operation Holiday Heroes" two and a half years ago after Hannah witnesses a classmates experience the emotional event of having a father returning from a year of deployment to Afghanistan.
"At Fisher House, they know that 'family' is GOOD medicine! They make it possible for our sick and injured military families to be together during times of need, just like we experienced when our mom had cancer," stated Hannah when asked why Fisher House was chosen for the project.
"It's really a special honor to help our military families. They have sacrificed so much in ways that I will never be able to understand. It was really rewarding being there and getting to see the smiles on their faces," stated Jackson.
This year the Button siblings were able to deliver over 100 wrapped Christmas gifts and goodies to the residents of Fisher House.
Since 2011 they have earned, collected and donated over $15,000 worth of gifts and support to the Fisher House.
"It's especially difficult that most of our residents are far away from family and home during the holidays. Hannah, Jackson and the Dream of a Better World kids really lift our spirits, just when we need it the most. And, they are another great reminder that people still care about our military families," stated Anita Clingerman, Manager of Tripler Fisher House.
"Dream of a Better World" has raised over $200,000 to help kids and families locally and around the world.
