FORT RUCKER, Ala.--Many members of the Fort Rucker community might find their holiday tables a little fuller this year thanks to a recent donation to the post's Food Locker made by the team from the Daleville Branch of the Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union (AACFCU).
Three Fort Rucker Soldiers visited the Daleville location of the AACFCU Friday to collect dozens of bags full of canned goods, baby items and more. The items, everything from pancake mix to cans of corn, were collected at branch during recent weeks as part of the credit union's annual canned food drive.
"We have been doing (the holiday food drives) for many years because they really help so many different people," Lisa Hales, AACFCU's vice president of marketing, said. "We know there are a lot of people who are going to need help this year during the holidays with their grocery bills and we wanted to do what we could to help."
The Fort Rucker Food Locker is managed by 1st Aviation Brigade and provides food to post Families in need.
Staff Sgt. Wilfredo Piris, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Food Locker, said Friday's donation will certainly help him as he works to ensure that every Fort Rucker Family who needs help this holiday season receives it.
"These donations make our jobs a lot easier," he said. "I am so moved by people's generosity."
Hales said supporting programs like the Food Locker is especially important as the economy remains turbulent.
"During times like these, every little bit helps," she said. "I encourage everyone to take a look in their pantries and see what they can do to help this year."
Vicky Davis, AACFCU Business Development Officer, said while it is very important for people to donate to the Food Locker, they should do so only after truly thinking about what they are donating.
"I have advised everyone to not just clean out their cabinets," she said. "Take a good look at expiration dates before you donate anything."
Piris said, during the upcoming holidays, the Food Locker will likely provide food for hundreds of Fort Rucker Families. He noted that it is going to take the help of the whole community to ensure that those hundreds of Families get what they need this season.
"We are going to make sure everyone on post will get to have a special holiday celebration this year," he said.
