BURLINGTON, N.C. - North Carolina National Guard's Readiness Center Transformation Master Plan was founded to realign traditional armories to Readiness Centers that reflect the changing needs of the state based on population and aligns forces to regional facilities for a more efficient and effective response during natural disasters or other emergencies.
The result of the master plan is the hub and spoke design. Burlington Readiness Center has been identified as a spoke and is being renovated under the NCNG's multimillion dollar Capital Improvement Project (CIP). Improvements to the site include lighting upgrades to efficient LEDs, drainage infrastructure and an increase in the parking lot and motor pool, all of which are currently underway.
Maj. Kent Caldwell, the director of design and project management for the North Carolina National Guard's Construction and Facility Management Office, stated, "By improving and increasing the workspace, the NCNG will increase the output and quality of training at this site."
The work being done in Burlington is the first project of 25. Each project will be about $1.2 million with approximately $40 million in total for the project.
"Overall, I am very pleased with the quality and pace of work," said Sgt. 1st Class Lee Klimala, the readiness NCO for the Burlington Readiness Center.
Harold Litzenberger, who has been contracted by the NCNG to oversee the project, stated, "I enjoy working with the NCNG. They are such great people, and I am proud to be part of a project where we can be both good stewards of American tax dollars and improve the quality of a facility used by our service members."
