Pacific Regional Medical Commander (PRMC), Brig. Gen. Patrick Sargent, participated as one of five members on the Diversity and Inclusion Panel Discussion sponsored by the Hawaii-Pacific Chapter of American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) held November 19, 2014 at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC).

"Army medical professionals must be culturally competent. Due to the changing work enviroment, race/religion/gender cannot be the focal point; providing world class care with cultural sensitivity is the focus," stated Sargent.

This discussion focused on diversity in the healthcare field and it's ethical and business imperative.

Sargeant's comments brought a military perspective to the topic.

"The Army has strong moral principles that all Soldiers learn when they enter the Army. Since we are an all-volunteer Army, almost all Soldiers embrace the Army's cultural diversity and values system. Additionally, all leadership courses that I have attended have built upon this foundation of cultural inclusion. The military ensures that acceptance and embracing diversity is woven into a Soldier's moral fiber," stated Sargent.

Sargent was joined by James Gauss, Moderator Chairman of Board Services Witt/Kieffer, Oak Brook, IL, VeLois Bowers, Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion CHRISTUS Health, Dallas, TX, Anthony Armada, CEO, Swedish Health Services, Seattle, WA, and Diane Paloma, Director, Native Hawaiian Health Program, The Queens Health Systems, Honolulu, HI on the panel discussion.
