Kenyan Soldier breezes through 5K, basic training

FORT SILL, Okla. -- Spc. Gilbert Kemboi's win in the Fourth Annual 214th Fires Brigade Fallen Soldier Memorial Run, Nov. 26 here was the latest jaunt that moved him to the United States.

Kemboi, who hails from Eldoret, Kenya, arrived in the U.S. five years ago on a cross-country scholarship and graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate at Spartanburg, S.C.

He learned of the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program and applied thanks in part to his ability to speak Swahili. Graduating from Basic Combat Training here Dec. 5, Kemboi will take his Advanced Individual Training as a healthcare specialist at Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston.

"This is the best opportunity for me to serve and to become an American citizen," said Kemboi.
