FORT BENNING, Ga., (Nov. 26, 2014) -- Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, unseated last year's champions 14th Combat Support Hospital in the 2014 Commander's Cup Flag Football Tournament. 1/10 defeated 14th CSH in the championship game 26-13 Nov. 24 at Doughboy Stadium.

Toris Knight, 1/10 head coach, said last year his team came in third, so this game was a form of redemption.

"For the whole season we went 10-1," he said. "We went into the playoffs with a little momentum, got on a good roll and ended up winning the championship. It feels good."

On their first possession of the game, 1/10 led 7-0 as quarterback Brandon Harris connected with Walter Parker on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Harris then ran the ball in for a one-point conversion.

14th CSH got on the scoreboard when head coach and quarterback Gerald Mosley led his team on a 39-yard drive with two minutes remaining in the half and hit Leonard Holmes on a 22-yard touchdown pass to make the score 7-6.

In the second half, both teams scored on back-to-back possessions, with 14th CSH scoring first on a Holmes interception at 1/10's 39-yard line, which he ran back for the touchdown to put 14th CSH ahead 13-7. Mosley then connected with Matthew Barrett to add the successful one-point conversion.

On 1/10's following possession, Harris tied the game on a 17-yard touchdown run to make the score 13-13.

1/10 scored again on their next possession as Harris hit Mariko Martin on a 14-yard pass and catch to put 1/10 on 14th CSH's 8-yard line to set up Harris' touchdown run to extend their lead to 19-13.

With 1:20 left in the game and 1/10 driving, Harris hit Michael Brown for a 22-yard touchdown pass with a successful one-point conversion, sealing the win 26-13.

Knight said the team started off slow on both sides of the ball with the offense not moving the ball as they did the last couple of games and the defense not playing as solid as they could, but they kept pushing forward.

He said Harris was a strong point during the game, as well as their defensive line who put pressure on the opposing quarterback.

"(The defensive line) definitely played a major role in ... our victory," Knight said.

He said a challenge 14th CSH posed was their speed and their experienced quarterback.

"For the whole season we overcame a lot of adversity; playing close games," Knight said. "So I knew as it came down to a close game, which it (did) at the end, (that) we could pull through."

Mosley said new personnel on the team made the difference between last year's victory and this year's second place.

"Over a two-year span, to go 28-2 the last two seasons, I would say we did OK, but nobody wants second place," he said. "Everybody wants to be a winner."

He said factors that hindered the game were penalties, not pulling flags, dropping passes and not running the correct routes.

Mosley said this is the most they've punted in any season he has played football.

"They got us down deep in our endzone ... (we had) to give our defense a chance to get sacks, turnovers and maybe get the ball back," he said.

Mosley said his team showed they could overcome adversity by climbing out of the loser's bracket.

The preseason champions, MEDDAC, took third place.
