BAUMHOLDER, Germany - Scott Stapp, former lead singer of the rock band Creed, performed for Soldiers of U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder, calling them "the cream of the crop."

"They inspire me with the sacrifice and commitment to our country and for what they do," he said after playing at the Hall of Champions here Oct. 12 in a show called "The Voice of Creed."

Stapp said his tour of installations overseas as part of Armed Forces Entertainment is family related. "[A]bout '99, I started sending care packages over to the troops. I have a sister-in-law who served in ... four conflicts and a father and grandfather who were in the military."

"And then I found out that there were opportunities for me to come over here," he said, "so I was like I'm on it, I'm going to ... show the troops how much I appreciate them," said Stapp.

Stapp interacted with the crowd throughout his Baumholder show. He shook hands while performing and personally thanked everyone he could. His band members threw guitar picks into the audience.

"This whole tour has had a massive impact on my life," the singer said. "It made me to kind of refocus on who I was and the kind of commitment I have - the things I care about and what my sacrifices really are."

"I have seen how deep and how important the sacrifices these Soldiers make really are," he added.

Arriving from the Middle East, Stapp said his group wants to return for shows in Iraq, where they were originally set to play but were prevented so by weather.

He said: "It has been an honor to be out here and to have the opportunity to do things we have done and to experience the things we have.

"These men and women have been an inspiration to us, and we hope that we can go back home and let our friends and family and any media outlets that we get to speak to know what kind of heroes are over here."

According to the Armed Forces Entertainment Web site, as the singer, song writer and founder of Creed, Stapp has produced three multi-platinum records, including one diamond record, sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, generated nine consecutive number one hits and won a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2000.

Plus he has been honored with four American Music Awards, 10 Billboard Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, five My VH-1 Music Awards, a People's Choice Award, a TouchTunes Award and two Radio Music Awards, among other honors.
