VICENZA, Italy -- Many U.S. Military retirees or their surviving spouses gathered at the Vicenza Army Health Center for the 2014 Retiree Appreciation Day Oct. 17.

On hand to answer questions and give out pamphlets and brochures were representatives from many agencies including Defense Finance and Accounting Services, U.S. Embassy Social Security team, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Red Cross, Installation Voter Assistance Officer, and Army Community Services.

Retirees took advantage of the many information booths and services set up at the facility and had blood pressure check and a flu shot.

"The Health Center dietitian, Capt. Carly Eckard, who coordinated the numerous medical services the retirees received in the most professional and courteous manner, truly was a prominent superstar in the eyes of the visiting retirees," said Samuel Coston, RAD coordinator.

Coston also highlighted the presence of the spouse of a former First Sergeant who was assigned to Caserma Ederle in the 1970s.

"Ms. Armida Spencer has traveled from Bolzano, a town located near the Italian-German border, for the past 30 years in order to attend every Retiree Appreciation Day," said Coston.

This year, Ms. Spencer lost her military identification card and her U.S. passport; however, this did not stop her to participate in the event.

After getting the new ID card at the Central Processing Facility Spencer said, "I have been conducting this trip every year for the past 30 years in order to see the last military base where my beloved husband served before retiring, to see old friends, to thank Americans for their assistance during the war, to remember the past, and to tell Mr. Samuel (Coston) to enjoy life."
