FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Fort Carson is expanding its single-stream recycling operations within motor pools to ramp up Net Zero waste efforts in units.

The Directorate of Public Works recycle program staff began distributing totes in November for use inside unit motor pools to collect aluminum and tin cans, all paper, glass, plastic, cardboard and magazines.

Once totes are full, Soldiers will empty the contents into large single-stream dumpsters provided by DPW and positioned outside of unit motor pool buildings for ease of collection by the recycle program staff.

Acceptable recyclable materials are noted on the dumpsters and totes. No food, liquid, clothes, Styrofoam or plastic bags should be disposed of in the single-stream totes and dumpsters. One of the few drawbacks of single- stream recycling is that some traditionally recyclable materials cannot go in the container, including plastic bags, which create problems for the recycling machinery and result in higher costs or having the materials rejected by the material recovery facility.
