FORT BENNING, Ga., (Nov. 19, 2014) -- 5th Squadron, 15th Cavalry Regiment, ended 14th Combat Support Hospital's run at an undefeated season Nov. 13 in the Commander's Cup Flag Football Playoffs Tournament at Engineer Field.
5/15 CAV sent 14th CSH into the loser's bracket with a 34-20 win.
"(14th CSH) beat us twice in the season ... they were the top dog," said Nicholas Dean, 5/15 CAV's head coach. "To come in to the playoffs and get a win over them; that lets us know we are the top tier team.
This is probably one of the best games we've played as a whole, defensively and offensively all year. This win speaks volumes for the team we put together."
The two teams battled score for score in the first half with two separate consecutive possession scores with 14th CSH scoring first to take a 6-0 lead on a Gerald Mosley to Leonard Holmes 53-yard touchdown pass.
On 5/15 CAV's possession, Dean tied the score 6-6 on a 66-yard touchdown run.
5/15 CAV extended their lead to 13-6 after a Charles Champion interception at 5/15 CAV's 28-yard line, which he brought back to 14th CSH's 35-yard line. Two plays later, Dean connected with Anthony Rodriguez on a 29-yard touchdown pass.
On 14th CSH's following possession, Mosley led his team on a 66-yard drive and hit Kelvin Murrell with a 1-yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-12.
In the second half, 5/15 CAV came out of halftime and scored following another Rodriguez interception, which put them at 14th CSH's 39-yard line. Eight plays later, Dean hit Yusef Hamilton with a 9-yard touchdown pass and connected with Champion on a successful one-point conversion extending the lead to 20-12.
14th CSH evened the playing field 20-20 on their subsequent possession, scoring on a 23-yard Mosley touchdown run and a Mosley to Holmes 10-yard pass for the two-point conversion.
5/15 CAV's next two scores came on consecutive possessions with a Dean to Michael Jones 14-yard touchdown pass and a Tavarse Anderson 14-yard touchdown run to make the final score 34-20.
Dean said his defense proved to be patient when it came to waiting on the ball and reading Mosley's arm and movements.
"He's a great quarterback," Dean said. And added, in regards to multiple interceptions, "I'm grateful (we) came away with those balls. It couldn't have come at a better time."
He said 14th CSH's defense put them to the test when it came to their number of sets, which gave them mismatches.
5/15 CAV's strongest advantage during the game was that everybody was catching the ball, Dean said.
"I can't put it on me," he said. "It was on those guys. They did an awesome job getting to the ball and coming away with it tucked under their arms and ... going for six."
