ABERDEEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- The U.S. Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity began another year of mentorship with Aberdeen Middle School for the 2014-2015 school year.
The students and AMSAA's mentors recently made their first field trip of the school year to Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River, between Maryland's Harford and Cecil Counties.
The tour highlighted the dam's structural design, hydroelectric power generation, and emergency reserve capabilities.
"I really enjoyed the tour of the Conowingo Dam. It is my favorite field trip so far," said an 8th grade student at Aberdeen Middle School.
The mission of the mentoring program is to encourage students to pursue college preparatory math and science classes in high school and to provide them with better opportunities to plan for careers in math, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
For several years, a team of engineers and analysts from the U.S. Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA) has partnered with Aberdeen Middle School to mentor the young minds of tomorrow teaching the students a variety of math shortcut exercises, games, and applications that demonstrate how math can be fun as well as applicable to AMSAA's support to the Soldiers.
"AMSAA's continued support and encouragement of Aberdeen Middle School students in the pursuit of their future choices is always appreciated," said Elizabeth Oleszczuk, guidance counselor and mentoring program sponsor at Aberdeen Middle School. "They truly make a difference at Aberdeen Middle School."
In the future, AMSAA plans to host guest speakers, introduce engineering challenges, and a field trip to the Pentagon.
