Sixty years ago, the official change of Armistice Day to Veterans Day was accompanied by a proclamation by then President Dwight D. Eisenhower that stated "let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

As guardians of our nation's capital, our part in preserving this heritage and promoting peace is undoubtedly essential and unique. I challenge each of you to demonstrate your dedication to this task by influencing your fellow military members, civilians, and family members to practice responsible behavior during this holiday timeframe. The fall season can be an enjoyable and busy time, and resources to encourage and enable safe activities are available at https://safety.army.mil/MEDIA/SeasonalSafetyCampaigns/Autumn2014.aspx.

Many of us will have a role in our National Veterans Day Observance on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery, while others will spend the day with loved ones or simply enjoy a day off. Whether at work or at play, please show your appreciation to the Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who have come before us and who we continue to honor through our service.

Have a safe and enjoyable Veterans Day holiday.
