FORT LEE, Va. (Nov. 6, 2014) -- Here are some tips to manage the diabetes disease.

• Check your feet daily. Look for red spots, cuts, swelling and blisters. If you cannot see the bottoms of your feet, use a mirror or ask someone for help.

• Know your HgbA1C level know your personal goal. Have it checked at least yearly.

• Know your Body Mass Index, and if not between 19-and-24 percent, make an appointment with your provider to discuss a healthy weight loss program.

• Know your blood pressure and personal control target numbers. Purchase a home BP monitoring device and keep a log. Bring the log to the next appointment with your provider and review the readings together.

• Get a flu shot annually and other booster vaccines as needed. Tetanus should be boosted every ten years.

• Take medications as prescribed. Use a plastic pill dispenser or similar reminder aid if necessary.
