Veteran's Day, formerly Armistice Day, is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, ending World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany. The armistice was signed at 11:00 a.m.--the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. The meaning of the day has since evolved into a tribute to all veterans who have served in the military, both during wartime and peacetime. Let us pause on November 11th to remember their honor, selfless service, and courage.

Many of our Soldiers, Civilians, and Families will use this Veteran's Day holiday weekend to travel outside the local area to visit relatives and friends, or enjoy a late autumn vacation. Regardless of your destination or activity for the upcoming Veteran's Day weekend, ensure safety is in the forefront of your planning.

For those of you who are planning to drive during the long weekend, please plan ahead. This is especially important as we transition back to standard time (end of daylight saving time). If your Veteran's Day weekend plans include driving to participate in the vast number of events taking place nationally, regionally, or even locally remember the following safety tips:

-Don't drink and drive. Even moderate consumption of wine or beer impairs reaction time and driving judgment. Designate an alternate driver, especially if you plan to indulge in alcoholic beverages. Driving while under the influence or even while fatigued is not worth the risk of jeopardizing your life or the lives of others.

-Limit distractions in vehicles while traveling--especially in cars equipped with electronic devices, including cell phones, video games and global positioning systems.

-Ensure all passengers are buckled up and children are in age-appropriate safety seats.

-Allow plenty of travel time to avoid frustration and diminish the impulse to speed.

-Drive defensively and exercise caution, especially during inclement weather and reduced visibility.

As you celebrate this holiday weekend, please keep our deployed servicemen and women, the civilians who support them, and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
