FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 22, 2014) -- Carver High School football standout Mekhi Brown has been chosen as a U.S. Army All-American, and was officially invited to play in the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl during a ceremony Oct. 20 at Carver.

"I am honored and thankful for the opportunity to play for those who protect our country, as well as those who have fought in the past," Brown said.

"I chose this game (to play in) because it was the right fit for me. I want to pay respect to those who have served in the military. All in all, I am very fortunate for my blessings. I never in my life thought a sport could change my life."

Brown is projected as a four-star prospect at weak-side defensive end by Rivals.com for the class of 2015 and has committed to play at Alabama.

In addition to his talent on the football field, Brown's character off the field helped him to earn the invite to the All-American Bowl.

"It takes a special person to be a Soldier, just as it takes a special athlete to be selected as a U.S. Army All-American," said Sgt. 1st Class John Fulton, who was on hand to extend the invitation to Brown on behalf of Secretary of the Army John McHugh and Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Raymond Odierno. "All-Americans not only possess the strength of a Soldier, but they live the Army values - loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. They are dedicated, motivated and know how to be a member of a team and a leader. It is these strengths that have earned them the right to wear our colors. ... Mekhi embodies the characteristics and values of an Army Strong Soldier and we are proud to have him on our team."

In addition to Brown, Fulton also formally invited Carver coach Joseph Kegler to attend the 2015 U.S. Army Coaches Academy and the All-American Bowl.

"I'd like to thank the U.S. Army and the All-American Bowl for giving us the opportunity to come out to San Antonio and be represented," Kegler said. "Hopefully, this is the first of many, many more."

The 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be televised live on NBC from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, at 1 p.m. Jan. 3.
