ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. -- Cindy Brock, Joint Munitions Command lead safety engineer, was presented the 2014 National Safety Council Rising Star Award, September 16.

Brock was one of the 41 recipients of the NSC Rising Star of Safety Class for 2014. She was recognized at the national awards celebration during the NSC Congress & Expo in San Diego, California.

The 2014 NSC Congress & Expo is the world's largest annual conference for safety professionals to learn from experts and leaders on industry-leading technology, receive education, networking opportunities, and implement new skills. The conference is a multi-day event with concurrent technical sessions, committee meetings, and an exposition of more than 900 companies showcasing the latest innovative safety products and services.

The NSC is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to save lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in home and communities, and on the road through leadership, research, education and advocacy. NSC advances this mission by partnering with businesses, government agencies, elected officials, and the public in areas where it can make the most impact -- distracted driving, teen driving, workplace safety, prescription drug overdoses, and safe communities.

"These Rising Stars are the future of safety," said Deborah Hersman, President and CEO, National Safety Council. "Congratulations to this year's NSC Rising Stars of Safety. We know that safety takes collaboration, and that more lives are saved and injuries prevented when we work together. I can only imagine how much more they will accomplish in the years ahead."

The NSC rising Stars of Safety program, now in its fifth year, recognizes future leaders for their dedication and influence in safety. Brock was selected this year by showing a strong commitment to promoting a cycle of continuous improvement and creating initiatives focused on measureable outcomes -- key components of the council's Journey to Safety Excellence.

As the JMC lead safety engineer, Brock's duties include developing and implementing safety policies to include application of risk management relating to the engineering program areas of system safety; interpreting and implementing safety regulations and policies; and assisting in developing safety design criteria and policy for ammunition systems, equipment, processes, and procedures. Brock also currently provides support for achieving and tracking Career Program 12 safety certifications for JMC CP12 careerists.

"I appreciate being nominated for the NSC Rising Star award by my supervisor, Mr. Luke Kearns," said Brock. "It is a great honor, and I am challenging myself to continue creating initiatives that help JMC accomplish its safety goals and objectives."

"Cindy created a process to assist 48 safety professionals within JMC to obtain Army Career Program 12 and Explosives Safety certificates," noted Brock's NSC Rising Star nomination package.

"The extensive training (58 courses) provides safety professionals with career-broadening safety education. Cindy was visible and out front by completing the courses ahead of others. She authored procedures adopted by the Army to guide careerists toward completion of the training. Cindy remains engaged by counseling, instilling hope, developing training schedules, and mentoring others. Her efforts increased safety professionals' completion rates from 21 percent to 67 percent in two years -- the highest completion rate of any Army Materiel Command's nine subordinate commands."

JMC produces small-, medium- and large-caliber ammunition items for the Department of Defense. JMC is the logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed.
