INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Lake City Army Ammunition plant was recently recognized for environmental excellence by receiving the Water Environment Federation Award, Sept. 30.
The Lake City Ammunition Plant's Industrial Wastewater Treat Plant was recognized for employees' efforts in an award presentation during the 2014 WEF Technical Exhibition and Conference held at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La.
The Water Environment Federation's annual technical exhibition and conference is recognized as the world's largest annual water quality event and provides the latest technologies and services for water environment preservation, restoration, and sustainability.
"What makes our event unique is that it represents all water and reflects what we're hearing and seeing as the most important water issues impacting our communities today," said WEF President Sandra Ralston.
The WEF is an organization of engineers and industry related to wastewater, water, and water reuse. WEF members include experts and specialists in the fields of environmental engineering, industrial wastewater treatment, sewage treatment, stormwater management, water quality analysis and planning, and related disciplines.
Using the Environmental Management System, Lake City Ammunition Plant attained a keen understanding of ammunition production processes' direct impact on the environment. Objectives and targets are clearly defined to reduce the environmental exposure of its production.
Additionally, the Army, Alliant Techsystems, Inc., LCAAP's contractor and ATK subcontractor, Burns and McDonnell Engineering Co. Inc., were selected by the WEF board of trustees as the 2014 recipients of the Industrial Water Quality Achievement Award for successfully executing upgrades to the IWTP.
The award acknowledges projects that demonstrate significant, lasting and measurable excellence in water quality improvement, as well as significant achievement in design, operation, or process changes that result in improved long-term quality.
The 2014 award recognizes upgrades made to the IWTP, as part of a $12M project funded by the Department of the Army, Joint Services. The project consisted of expanding the existing IWTP, which resulted in a significant improvement in wastewater discharged from the plant. Since the upgrade improvements, the average discharge of minerals from the IWTP has decreased by 50 percent.
"These efforts and awards demonstrates LCAAP's commitment to environmentally sound manufacturing processes that protect our Nation's natural resources by producing ammunition products and services in an responsible manner," said Lt. Col. Shane Upton, LCAAP commander.
LCAAP is a military industrial installation, under the major command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command and the subcommand of the U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command.
The installation's primary mission is to manufacture, load, assemble, and proof-test small arms munitions, which include 5.56mm, 7.62mm, .50 caliber and 20mm. Major manufacturing operations consist of metal forming of raw brass and copper to create case, bullet, and primer components; blending of pyrotechnics and manufacture of initiating explosives; and priming, loading, assembling, and packing operations.
JMC is the logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed.
