FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 15, 2014) -- The Fort Benning Doughboys played their second game of the season against the Faulkner University Eagles Oct. 12 at Doughboy Stadium, and the Eagles came away with their second win, this time 33-10.

Head coach Jason Gibson said the Doughboys offense did better this time against the Eagles than the previous meeting at Faulkner.

"I thought we moved the ball well, we were just having trouble punching it in and giving the defense that lead," he said. "(However,) we (weren't) scoring and we (weren't) getting the ball in the end zone."

The Doughboys jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their first possession on a 51-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trivon Williams to Vernon Bigham and a successful extra point by kicker Mario Ledezma.

They were in the "right place at the right time," Gibson said. The team wasn't sure if Williams was going to play because his wife gave birth the night before the game.

"He doesn't even warm up," he said. "(Williams) jumps on the field and throws the touchdown pass."

The Eagles put up points early in the second quarter with a Caleb Taylor touchdown run with 12:50 remaining in the first half.

Taylor's touchdown was set up by a 54-yard run by Christian Childree. Four plays later, Taylor scored on a 5-yard run. The Doughboys' Mark Francis blocked the Eagles' extra point and kept the Doughboys ahead 7-6.

The Doughboys final score of the game came with 7:01 left in the second quarter on a Ledezma 35-yard field goal to put the Doughboys up 10-6.

Gibson said he went for the field goal because he didn't want to waste the opportunity to take advantage of getting the points.

"(Ledezma's) good enough to make those kicks," he said. "So, if they are going to give us the points, we are going to take them."

With one second remaining in the first half, the Eagles scored another touchdown with quarterback Truman Franklin hitting Logan Jozwiak for the two-point conversion to put the Eagles on top 14-10.

In the second half, Taylor scored three times for the Eagles.

Taylor's first score came on a 32-yard pass from Franklin. He also scored on a 6-yard run and closed out the 33-10 win with 10:27 left in the game on a 5-yard run.

Taylor's final touchdown was set up by Mitchell Hoskins' fumble recovery, which Hoskins returned from the Doughboys' 38-yard line to the 5-yard.

"Defensively we did well (and) we did well against them last time too," Gibson said. "I felt that we sputtered on offense. The third quarter was atrocious. That really put the nail in the coffin ... even going into the fourth quarter we were only down by two touchdowns. We were still in the game but we just didn't have that spark to where (we could) score (a) one play kind of offense and it's just a struggle right now for us to get yards."

The Doughboys lost four starters to injuries last game, Gibson said. So, for everybody to walk off the field with no injuries this game was quite positive.

"People don't understand (the Army) is their full time job," he said. "They are not out here practicing five days a week like all of the other teams. We are two nights a week."

Throughout the years, Gibson said the Doughboys and Eagles have had a good relationship and it's fun to play them.

Though the two rivals didn't split their games this year, Gibson said "there is always next year."

The Doughboys next game is at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 against the Columbus State University's Cougars club team at Doughboy Stadium, where they will be hosting the annual Doughboy Bowl.

The Doughboy Bowl tailgating starts at 5 p.m. in the Doughboy Stadium parking lot.
