JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - About 20 participants gathered outside the Fort Myer Fitness Center on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in early morning showers Oct. 1 for the annual 2-mile run and 1-mile walk to kick off the 2014 Combined Federal Campaign.

CFC is the biggest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign in the world, according to the CFC's website. Federal civilian, postal and military workers pledge money throughout the campaign season, which runs from Sept. 1 to Dec. 15, to support non-profit organizations providing health and human services globally.

According to the Office of Personnel Management website, the CFC raised $209.7 million for charitable organizations in 2013.

JBM-HH Commander Col. Mike Henderson and Command Sgt. Maj. Randall E. Woods were on hand to compete, and Henderson reminded participants why they were running.

"This is probably my 23rd year contributing to CFC, and the great thing about CFC is that you can pick the charity that you want your money to be donated to," Henderson said. "You've got some input. This is important. I appreciate your dedication coming out here in the rain."
