ANSBACH, Germany (Oct. 16, 2014) -- U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach's Directorate of Public Works installed the first installation sign that falls within the Department of Defense's revised design standards Oct. 8 at Barton Barracks.

The new sign is part of a transition from displaying the garrison mission and logo to displaying the Army mission and logo.

Command Sgt. Maj. Mark A. Kiefer, USAG Ansbach command sergeant major, spoke about the importance of adopting the new standards.

"The issue is about branding," said Kiefer. "We are a standards-based organization, and the Unified Facilities Criteria prescribe what all signage should look like per the established directive. The effort is designed to get all DoD facilities to adopt these specific signage criteria and present a uniform appearance across the entire (Installation Management Command) enterprise."

Kiefer attributed the quick turnaround on the Barton Barracks signs to the Directorate of Public Works staff.

"USAG Ansbach has a very proactive Department of Public Works," said Kiefer. "When the order was received, we had the right people working diligently to comply and meet this standard.

"Barton Barracks is the home of USAG Ansbach," continued Kiefer. "We started with our headquarters first and will methodically work our way through the garrison until all requirements are met and the community becomes one recognizable standard."

This sign is just the first step in an installation-wide effort to bring uniformity to signs used at military installations across the DoD.

Other access control points and garrison facilities will receive new signs in the future, according to Kiefer:

"As time passes and more and more of the old labeling is removed, the community will see the common, standard theme regarding signs and U.S. Army/DoD branding initiative."
