FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 8, 2014) -- For three-quarters of a century, Tuskegee University and Morehouse College have met on the gridiron in the longest-running football rivalry in black college history. At 5 p.m. Saturday, the two teams will renew the rivalry for the 79th time at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium in the annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic.
Since 1936, the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee and the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse, two of the founding members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, have met in Columbus in what is considered the "Granddaddy" of all classics.
But, this is not just any football game - it's a weeklong event featuring a golf tournament, entertainment, parade and two days worth of tailgating.
If you're in it for tailgating, the two-day festivities begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 10 in designated areas outside the stadium.
For those who enjoy a round of golf, kick off the weekend Friday with the 15th Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Golf Classic at Bull Creek Golf Course. Tee time is 12:30 p.m., and although the registration deadline has passed, late registration is being accepted for $100 per golfer. Format for the tournament is a two-man scramble with prizes awarded for first, second and third place, along with individual awards.
On Saturday, game day kicks off with a parade, which begins at the intersection of Broad Street and Dillingham Street in Phenix City and ends on 1st Avenue in Columbus.
At 5 p.m. the Golden Tigers and the Maroon Tigers face off on the gridiron for their annual battle in Columbus. Over the past seven years, Tuskegee leads the series between the two teams.
