FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 1, 2014) -- The Fort Benning Bengals Team Black lost to the Phenix City Titans 40-7 Sept. 25.
The Columbus Youth Football League 11- to-13 year-old division teams played at Meadow Lane Field, Phenix City, Alabama.
In the first quarter, the Titans led 18-0 with Eddie Williams Jr. scoring twice on the opening kickoff return and a touchdown pass from quarterback Jerome Bradley as well as a touchdown run by Terelle Barnes.
Eddie's first touchdown was a 68-yard kickoff return only 22 seconds into the game and Terelle scored on a 2-yard run following a fumble recovery at the Bengals (B) 42-yard line by Brandon Williams.
Jerome hit Eddie with a 38-yard pass to score his second touchdown with 2:16 left in the quarter.
The Bengals (B) scored their only touchdown on their first possession in the second quarter trailing 18-7.
Quarterback La'Darious Roper connected with Maurice Fiame on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 9:00 remaining in the quarter. Maurice followed by adding the extra point with a 1-point conversion.
Head Bengals (B) coach Travis Washington said the drive they scored on was the one drive the players showed their potential and did what they were supposed to do.
"After that, they panicked when we went down again," he said. "They didn't know what to do, when to do it, how to do it and that's not all their fault, it's half the coaches fault. We will take the blame for that."
With 4:14 left, the Titans' Eddie scored their only touchdown of the quarter and his third touchdown of the game with a 58-yard punt return. The 2-point conversion by Jarkavious Thomas was a success, putting the Titans at a 26-7 lead at the end of the half.
On their second possession with 3:54 left in the third quarter, the Titans' Jarkavious scored a 13-yard touchdown run with an unsuccessful 2-point conversion following, making the score 32-7.
With 8:42 remaining in the game, the Titans scored their only and last touchdown of the quarter with the mercy rule put into effect.
The Titans' Curtis Thomas III connected with Jerome on a 7-yard touchdown pass and an ensuing successful 2-point conversion ran by Terelle ending the game 40-7.
Washington said "being unprepared" and the Titans' "capitalizing on our mistakes" is what went wrong during the game.
"(For) a lot of them, it's their first time playing (and) we kind of figured it would be a rude awakening for them," he said. "We saw flashes of them playing to their potential, but we had a lot of mental lapses, ... which the coaches will work on (with them)."
Washington said physical and mental toughness are two skills that will be worked on.
"They've got to bounce back on their mistakes," he said. "If something happens, let it go (and) keep moving."
