FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 1, 2014) -- The Georgia Prep Sports Academy Lions overpowered the Fort Benning Doughboys for a 54-21 win Sept. 27 at Doughboy Stadium.
The Lions and Doughboys played a close game in the first half with the Lions dominating in the second half. The two teams exchanged interceptions and both quarterbacks scored on 2-point conversions. But the Lions were able to take advantage of numerous Doughboy penalties and overcome their own.
Head coach Jason Gibson said the Lions' numbers were a big challenge.
"It was almost like the movie 300," he said. "Every time I turned around they were running with more guys. It caught up to us at the end."
In the first quarter, the Lions led the Doughboys 16-6 with a touchdown run from William Kelly and a touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Ward to Ra'kheem Hoyt.
Kelly's first touchdown was set up by a 19-yard kickoff return from Alex Bouie on the Lions' 30-yard line to their 49-yard line. Kelly later scored on a 51-yard run. Hoyt's touchdown was set up by a Lion interception by Tetris Sweatt at the Lions' 24-yard line. Seven plays later, Ward hit Hoyt with a 43-yard touchdown pass.
The Doughboys scored with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Trivon Williams to Patrick Henderson with 5:02 remaining in the quarter.
In the second quarter and on the second Doughboy possession, Williams connected with Jaron Turner on 21-yard touchdown pass, which cut the lead to 16-13.
With 3:03 left in the quarter, Lions quarterback Marcus Reynolds hit Raylen Elzy with a 34-yard touchdown pass.
The 2-point conversion was successfully added by Reynolds, ending the half with the Lions on top 24-13.
In the second half and on the first Lion possession, Reynolds led his team on a 50-yard drive for their first touchdown of the third quarter.
Four plays later, Reynolds scored a 24-yard touchdown run with 11:03 remaining on the clock making the lead 32-13.
The Doughboys scored their third touchdown of the game with a touchdown pass from Williams to Tyler Angleman.
Angleman's touchdown was set up by an interception from Doughboy Kenneth Robinson at the Doughboys' 18-yard line. Sixteen plays later, Williams connected with Angleman on a 14-yard touchdown pass.
Williams subsequently ran for a successful 2-point conversion making the score 32-21.
Gibson said an adjustment the Doughboys attempted to make to offset the defense in the second half dealt with a couple of blocking schemes.
"We saw some holes that we could have taken advantage of, but we didn't do it coming out into
the third quarter, so we kind of stalled a little bit," he said. "I thought we had a good chance to really get back in the game. We had a chance to score (again), but ... we stalled (and had to) punt."
In the fourth quarter, the Lions scored their last three touchdowns with two touchdown runs by Andre Eubanks and Marcelis Logan and a touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Byrd to Nathan Walters.
Eubank's touchdown was set up by a Lion interception by Sweatt at their 43-yard line, which he returned 21 yards to the Doughboys' 36-yard line. A 15-yard penalty in favor of the Lions moved them up to the Doughboys' 21-yard line, which later made way for Eubank's 21-yard touchdown run to make the score 40-21.
With Byrd guiding his team on a 33-yard drive, he hit Walters with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 7:42 remaining in the quarter, bumping their lead to 46-21.
The Lions added their final score with 6:24 left in the game on a Logan touchdown run. The Lions recovered their own kickoff at their 29-yard line, which set up Logan's 4-yard touchdown run three plays later, ending the game 54-21.
Though the numbers posed a disadvantage, Gibson said they played a team that had good athletes.
"We had our chances, but we just didn't capitalize on (them)," he said. "I thought there were a lot of calls that didn't go our way early that set the tone for the game that was a carrier from the previous game."
However, Gibson said, no one gave up.
"It's what's so great about this team," he said.
