Passing of an ACC leader

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala -- Redstone Arsenal officials have announced that a Soldier died Sept. 27 from an apparent gunshot wound in his Redstone Arsenal residence.

Colonel Richard L. Shepard, 51, whose home of record is listed as Lawrence, Kansas, entered active-duty service in 1986, as a second lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps. He was assigned as the Army Contracting Command Deputy Chief of Staff for Human Capital, since September 2013.

In June 2012, Shepard deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of the Office of Security Cooperation.

Shepard's awards and decorations include Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Services Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award), and the Parachutist Badge. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.

Foul play is not suspected.
