FORT BENNING, Ga., (Aug. 27, 2014) -- Fort Benning's Child, Youth & School Services hosted the annual NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition at French Field Saturday. Local youth from ages 6 to 15 participated in the competition.

PP&K began in 1961, making it the oldest grassroots initiative of the NFL. According to the PP&K website, the program continues to reach children and allow them to experience the fun of learning football fundamentals in an engaging and supportive noncontact environment.

Boys and girls competed separately in one of the five age categories. Each contestant was allowed one punt, pass, and kick during the competition. Scores are based on both distance and accuracy.

The top finisher in each of the boys and girls age brackets will advance to the sectional round. Only the top four first-place finishers in each age bracket from the boys' and girls' divisions from the pool of sectional competition champions will advance to the team championship. The national finals competition involves one contestant from each age group sponsored by each of the NFL's 32 teams.

"We had about 50 participants this year," said Dorrie Wagner, director of youth sports for CYSS. "I think the kids had a good time. It was an opportunity for the youth to show their skills."

"I am very passionate about working to develop the physical, social and emotional aspect of today's youth," coach Charles Flowers said.

Flowers worked as the head baseball coach for Shaw High School for 18 years and 14 of those years he was the head football coach and athletic director.

"The NFL's Punt, Pass and Kick is another way to help mentor kids and provide opportunities for them to compete locally and nationally."
