FORT BENNING, Ga. (Aug. 20, 2014) -- For Soldiers, Family members and Fort Benning civilians looking to renew a driver's license in the state of Georgia or to take a driving test, the Georgia Department of Driver Services recently opened a convenient new branch on post.
Susan Sports, DDS public information director, said the new facility is part of the state's efforts to better serve the military community.
"It had been a goal of ours to bring our services to military installations, and this is the first one in the state to open up," she said. "A mission of ours and of the governor's and the state leadership is to support our Soldiers, their Family members, retirees and civilian employees."
The branch, located at 6691 Marchant Avenue, Building 217, is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The 1,300-square foot facility includes four service windows and six computer testing stations where all knowledge-based tests can be administered.
The branch also offers road tests for regular vehicles by appointment only. To make an appointment for a road test, call 866-754-3687.
Motorcycle and commercial driver's license tests are not offered at the Fort Benning branch. All other services, including license renewals, replacements for lost or stolen licenses, out-of-state transfers, full reinstatements, obtaining driving history reports and insurance reinstatements are provided at the facility.
Sports said the addition of the Fort Benning branch will be a big help for both those on post and the DDS.
"It'll be kind of two-pronged," Sports said. "Not only will it make all of our services more convenient for those on Fort Benning, but it will take strain away from the surrounding customer service centers."
