More than 100 Fort Leonard Wood service members and family members attended the 5th annual "Show-me Salute to All Who Serve" Military Appreciation Day ceremony held in the James L. Mathewson Exhibition Center at the 112th annual Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, Mo., Aug. 10.

Part of the ceremony included remarks by Maj. Gen. Leslie Smith, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general, Maj. Gen. Stephen Danner, adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard, U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew Brooks, vice commander of the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, and Dr. Tommy Macdonnell, a decorated World War II veteran, who was part of the initial assault on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944.

During his speech, Smith recognized the service members who traveled from Fort Leonard Wood to attend the ceremony.

"We are very fortunate in America to have such dedicated and devoted men and women willing to serve our nation," he said.

Smith then spoke about the importance of Missouri's relationship with the military and the significance of the military appreciation day theme.

"Missouri has played a large role in building our forces around the world from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and continues to this day," Smith said. "This year's theme, a 'Show-me Salute to All Who Serve' epitomizes Missouri's long-standing support of the military, which started back in the 1820s and continued through the next century through today."

The ceremony concluded with a rolling thunder where motorcyclists revved their engines in a patriotic remembrance to those who served and never made it home and to pay respect to past and current veterans.
