WIESBADEN -- "Dirty Ballerina," "Arctic Enema" and "Electroshock Therapy" were just some of the sadistically creative obstacles athletes faced at three of the 22 stumbling blocks placed over 13 miles of mud, muck and ice-cold water. Why would anyone pay upwards of $100 for such a harrowing experience?

For 17 Soldiers from the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade's 24th MI Battalion, camaraderie was the main draw. Soldiers from Companies A and B took part in the Rhein-Main Tough Mudder in Hirzenhain, Germany, Aug. 10.

"I thought it would be a great way to get motivated people to do a team-building activity," said 2nd Lt. William Alfonsi, who organized the team.

"It's always great to be able to go out and participate in team-building events with your Soldiers and families away from the office," said Capt. Pamela Bracey, Company A commander. "18 kilometers of obstacles and running is definitely a way of bringing people together. The Apaches and Bandits did an amazing job and I'm really proud of the effort they put out and the heart they showed."

"All the wall stuff is easier for a team," added 1st Lt. Sean Eyre. "Teamwork can carry you through."

Tough Mudder was designed by British Special Forces to test grit, stamina, strength and esprit de corps. The next Tough Mudder events that take place in Germany are Suddeutschland in Wassertrüdingen Sept. 27-28 and Hamburg Oct. 11-12.
