USAG DAEGU -- Certain words almost always trigger a recollection of a special time or event in one's life. For example, spring might remind some people of a picnic under a bright blue sky with puffy white clouds and lots of sunshine. For others, it might be a holiday like Christmas with lots of family and friends gathered around a brightly lit Christmas tree. For still some others, it might be the excitement of attending Vacation Bible School. By many accounts, the latter seemed to be just what was on the minds of families throughout USAG Daegu and Area IV as they turned out in support of Vacation Bible School July 29 through Aug. 1 at Daegu American School, Camp George.
"Vacation Bible School is an outreach for children to bring the Gospel to them," said Vacation Bible School Program Director April Morris. "It introduces them to the Bible, but more than that it introduces them to Jesus Christ. This one-week program lets children who have never been to church, come in. It also gives them an opportunity to be with other kids too."
With "Jesus always loves you" as its theme, VBS organizers for this year's event proclaimed sweet success as they reported 187 kids officially enrolled in the program, and 120 volunteers extending their time and energy to make this one of the most highly successful and memorable VBS experiences ever.
From preschoolers and elementary school students to parents, all VBS participants were actively engaged in a variety of songs that filled the air in and around the Daegu American School Gym.
Anyone present could sense the power of the religious concept because of the joy that was all around.
After spending nearly two months getting ready for VBS, the staff had everything to be proud of. Their hard work was paying off as they watched the children now assembled scurry off to join four fun-filled stations operated by crews of 17. At the various locations they were able to dabble in everything from arts and crafts to dancing.
"I really like dancing, so I enjoyed dancing in front of people. Also I could relieve stress through dance and songs," said 10 year-old Vincent Iwuchukwu.
Not even the summer sun could cast a shadow on all the games, the fun, and the friendship that VBS brought to the Area IV community. USAG Daegu Command Chaplain (MAJ) Sun C. Lee called the event outstanding.
"This year was wonderful," he said. "We had so many people who showed up and wanted to be a part of this year's VBS effort. We had a great showing of support."
An active participant in this year's program, Danielle Sears, a primary organizer of this year's VBS program, gave a big applause to the volunteers.
"VBS is an example of the great relationship between the chapel and the community," Sears said. "Many Soldiers and spouses had a hand in the success of VBS, as well as the Korean Women's Bible Study Group who provided all the food. I sincerely appreciate what everyone did to support this year's VBS effort."
With Vacation Bible School 2014 on its way to the USAG Daegu history book, maybe the words of 10 year-old Sarah Allen that sums up the true meaning of the event. She said, "While you're having fun, you can learn about God and Jesus."
