AMC commander presents award to Army Inspector General

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala., -- Army Materiel Command's top leader, Gen. Dennis L. Via, presented the prestigious Somervell Medal of Excellence to Army Inspector General Lt. Gen. Peter M. Vangjel during the IG's visit to AMC and Redstone Arsenal Aug. 4-6.

The General Brehon B. Somervell Coin-Medallion recognizes a lifetime of service and support to Army sustainment. Vangjel, who has served more than 35 years, has held a number of key staff and command positions during his career.

His award nomination noted he was instrumental in resolving complex problems found in U.S. Military Cemetery management, helping rebuild the nation's trust in the system. The nomination also recognized his achievements while he was the Deputy Commanding General (Sustainment), Third Army in the 2010 surge of personnel and equipment to Afghanistan.

Vangjel's tour to the arsenal was his second while serving as the Army Inspector General. The trip included visits to the U.S. Army Contracting Command, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Strategic Forces, Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command, and Joint Systems Integration Laboratory.
